It has been estimated that keloids affect up to 6 million Americans. But what causes a C section keloid scar and what can be done about it?

What Are C Section Keloids?
Well regardless of a keloid’s location, basically it is a scar that doesn’t know when to stop growing. Instead of just developing a small scar along the cut, a keloid will keep growing over time. Like regular scar tissue, keloids are made primarily of collagen. A C section keloid scar is one which grows out of the C section incision line.

Please note that a C section keloid scar should not be confused with a hypertrophic scar, which may look similar. A hypertrophic scar is one which usually become bed, itchy, and raised during the months following the cut. Over time it should subside. Meanwhile a keloid is a scar which continues to grow. In order to diagnosis your type of scar, it would be best to consult a doctor.

What Causes Keloids?
This type of scarring is also found to be most prevalent in those with darker skin pigmentation. Despite it being an age-old problem, the exact cause of keloids is not know, however it does appear there is a genetic link. So not only do we not know what causes them, but we also don’t know when they will occur.

Some people won’t develop their first keloid scar until later on in life. Some people will develop them in one area of the body (such as where the C section scar is made) but they won’t develop them elsewhere. So this is an extremely confusing and frustrating problem due to its unpredictable nature. It can be especially scary if it’s the first keloid you’ve ever had, but if so, please don’t be alarmed. Fortunately, keloids are usually considered to be more of a cosmetic issue rather than a health issue.

What to do if you have a C section keloid scar?
Without a doubt, you will need to visit a dermatologist that is a keloid specialist. Everyone requires a different treatment plan depending on their skin type and keloid history (if they even have a history). The doctor may use a series cortisone injections, a freezing treatment, or he may perform surgery to remove the scar. There are also other keloid scar removal treatments which he may use. Don’t try and remove your C section keloid scar yourself, because there is a relatively high risk it will come back for many people. This is why you need professional medical care to help minimize the risk of another keloid returning in its place.

Out of all the places to get this type of scarring, I have heard the chest keloids are the most difficult to treat.

Why chest keloids are so frustrating…
One of the most disappointing things about having a keloid in this area is that it can often be extremely difficult to treat. I’m not a medical professional by any means, but I suspect this might be because of their typical shape and size. Chest keloids tend to be flatter and tend to grow over the area. The other common trait they have is the intense red color. Each of these qualities can make treatment difficult.

I hate to call this “good” news, but the one benefit of keloids on the chest is that they can usually be covered by a shirt (unlike when they’re on the face). However, they’re still visible when a top is not worn. For the sufferer, this can be something that is discouraging and even depressing. As down as you may feel, it’s important to remember that everyone else (at least adults) know exactly what keloids are and they don’t judge people that have them. Although it’s hard for a keloid sufferer to realize this mentality, there are many people that actually find these scars really cool looking believe it or not.

Is it possible to get rid of chest keloids or are they permanent?
Again I would like to point out that I’m not a doctor, so I’m not someone qualified to answer this question. However from what I understand (and as we previously discussed) a chest keloid is one of the hardest types to treat. It may be possible to get rid of, but sometimes it’s not. To find out, you will of course need to talk to a dermatologist and there’s really know way to know until you’ve tried the doctor’s recommended course of treatment.

When it comes to treating keloids on the chest, typically the only things that work are medical treatments that only your doctor can perform. For example, I have heard that getting steroid injections from the dermatologist can help flatten them over time. To address the red discoloration, some patients have had success with laser scar treatment. So the typical treatment plan might involve the doctor administered injections to flatten the scar, followed by the laser scar removal to treat the chest keloid’s discoloration.

But creams are known to help with discoloration from flat keloids.

Our skin is similar to that of a timeline. It is put through so much throughout our entire life span it is no wonder that many people develop some sort of physical scarring. Our skin protects our body and works to prevent infections when we have any type of skin trauma or accident. Through years of harmful environmental factors as well as sometimes unfortunate circumstances our skin takes a beating.

Trauma
I remember when I was younger and I used to play a lot of different sports. There were times when I had to sacrifice my body, whether it was learning how to ride a bike and falling off of it or sliding into second base to avoid being tagged out. At the time I didn’t really think about what I was doing to my skin. It isn’t until years later that I realized the long term damage I had caused to my skin.

Now there are treatments that are available to help with these skin imperfections, including keloids. Such treatments including keloid surgery, are made available for anyone who would like to increase the appearance of their skin and not worry about those unsightly flaws.

Surgery
One type of scar removal surgery that people use to help treat these raised scars on the body is a treatment called excisional surgery. This process consists of complete removal of the scar tissue and replacing adjacent non scarred tissue in a process called skin grafting. There is a minimal amount of soft tissue used in this procedure to prevent the new skin used from other parts of the body from scarring.

Radiation
Another type of keloid surgery is radiation. Although this treatment can be used on it’s own, it is much more effective when combined with the excisional surgical procedure. The best type of radiation therapy is brachytherapy and this treatment is combined with excisional surgery. These two procedures work together to maximize the dissipation of the scar. In many cases the scar is completely dissolved. Studies have shown that postoperative use of radiation is just as effective as a combination of both preoperative and postoperative procedures.

Laser Therapy
This another form of keloid surgery and has some positive aspects that make in the treatment of scar tissue. The reasons being that it it has less trauma on skin tissue and is less likely to create excessive inflammation. This type of therapy is made of four different types of lasers. One is flash lamp pulse dyed laser, argon laser, carbon dioxide laser, and Nd:YAG laser. The carbon dioxide laser and argon laser promote collagen shrinkage which is made possible by the heat that is radiated through the laser. The pulse-dyed laser helps with microvascular thrombosis and the Nd:YAG helps with the production of collagen. All of these treatments have not been very successful in treatment compared to some of the other treatments discussed. They have a greater likelihood of reoccurrence.

What To Do Next?
Now that you know more about the different types of keloid surgery you can make an appointment to consult with your dermatologist to find out more about the benefits and side effects of these procedures. It should be noted that I am not a medical professional nor do I claim to be, therefore consulting with your professional doctor or dermatologist would be ideal for you make a well educated decision on whether the aforementioned or any other types of keloid removal are something you should consider.

While it may not be a miracle, some people have improvement with keloid cream. If it’s a large keloid scar which sticks out, this treatment probably won’t be very effective. But if it’s a flat keloid and you’re trying to treat the discoloration from it, there are scar removal treatment creams which may be able to help.

Who will benefit most from the creams? Well did you know that many people of darker skin tones are more likely to develop keloids then other people of more fair complexions? Now it makes since. I always wondered why it seemed like whenever I ended up with a cut or scrape from being the clumsy person I am it always seemed to heal a certain way. It also had a tendency to turn a different color then the rest of my skin. I noticed that this scar tissue was much lighter then the skin on the rest of my body.

You’re Not Alone
Whether these scars have left you feeling self conscious or a little insecure that is perfectly normal. With society being so wrapped up in beauty and doing whatever it takes to achieve this it’s no surprise that you would be feeling the way you do. There are millions of people who have this same problem and for a long time there wasn’t really anything they were able to do about it. In today’s high tech skin care industry there are a multitude of different types of treatments that help vanish these abnormalities of the skin.

Treatment
One such product that is available for purchase in the online beauty industry that helps with these scars are different types of keloid cream. These agents help promote new cellular production which may improve the appearance of not only the scar, but the skin around it as well.

Unless you have actually had to deal with these unsightly marks on the skin, you don’t realize how great you have it. Some people are even so self conscious that they cover up the parts of the body that have these scars because they don’t want others to see them. So much for wearing shorts in the summer or short sleeve tops, if you have these scars on parts of the body, then you know exactly what I am talking about.

A good keloid cream in my opinion should do one of many things. One, it should help get rid of the scar. Two, it should help with moisturizing the area where the scar is, and three, it should help promote the development of new skin so that the scar tissue can be refurbished and blend in with the rest of my skin. I would prefer not to have my skin look like a quilt that was pieced together with different colors of skin. How about you?

But It’s Important To Know…
…these creams are not a cure. In fact for many they may not be effective at all. They usually only help with discoloration and not the large scars which protrude out. That being said, because they’re usually pretty cheap to buy, many often give them a shot anyways. There are a variety of different types from a variety of price ranges to help give you the treatment you desire. I am not a medial professional, nor do I claim to be, therefore consulting with a dermatologist would be a great way to find out more infrormation. That way you can make an informed decision on what product to buy.

Everyone responds differently to each treatment. Fortunately there are different methods, from surgery to silicone scar sheets, and chances are at least one of them will be able to help you. You will need to talk to your doctor to learn more about them.

But before you talk to your doctor, I’ll discuss some of the methods I’m familiar with. Have you ever heard of the word scar? Of course you’re probably all too familiar with it! Are you curious about what this word means? I thought you might be. Put in very simple terms this word is used to describe skin that has been damaged due to a wide variety of environmental factors. There are a many different situations that cause the formation of this type of skin imperfection. Many of the common causes are chicken pocks, acne burns, ear piercing, minor scratches and traumatic wounds. What happens is during the healing process there is an increase collagen production. This leaves the person with excess scar tissue in this particular area where the skin trauma had taken place.

But keloids, on the other hand, are a totally different matter…

Causes
So why do keloid scars occur? It’s suspected that genetics has a big part to do with it so you can’t control it. When a person ends up with this excess in scar tissue, it is because the body produces a certain type of collagen glue instead of regular collagen and does so at an even quicker pace then normal. The reason this occurs is because the body is designed to quickly heal parts of the body that are bleeding or infected. But with this type of scar, the body responds abnormally to the wound, and in such, results in keloid scar tissue.

Coping
Many people who find themselves left with these type of scars feel self conscious about them, so in order to help conceal them they have taken drastic measures to help with these visual imperfections of the skin. It used to be that the only way that there was a solution to this problem was by way of some type of cosmetic surgery, but times have changed and so have the advancements in technology. Another way that people deal with these skin ailments is by using various skin treatments as an aide in keloid scar removal.

Correcting
One way that people are able to be successful at keloid scar removal is through a process called “skin remodeling.” This process takes place by the removing the scar tissue and replacing it with a mixture of skin cells and invisible collagen fibers. This entire process can be progressive and can last for up to 10 year in order to see the full results.

Another way that people are successful at scar removal is to use a treatment that uses natural enzymes to help accelerate the body’s own naturalistic healing process. The results of these types of treatments varies and can sometimes take several months in order to see progress. Other factors such as how old the scar tissue is and how deep the scars are can also affect how well these treatments work. An ideal treatment of this sort should help promote new capillary growth and production of new collagen, elastin and other water holding molecules in order to be vastly affective in the treatment of scars.

Now that you have learned a few important facts regarding keloid removal, you can talk to your doctor and make a well thought out decision in determining which kind of treatment would be best for you. Whether it is through cosmetic surgery or through a skin care product it is nice to know that there are options for us.

It can be terrifying to develop a belly button keloid. Usually for many people this is the first time every they have gotten a keloid scar. You don’t know what you should do to treat it. It’s most important to see a dermatologist so it can be accurately diagnosed and treated early. This is because it’s easier to remove them early on. Let’s take a look at some of your options.

Before we talk more about how to get rid of a belly button keloid, let’s talk a little bit about this condition in general. If this is the first time you’ve gotten this type of scar, you probably are looking to learn as much as you can about it.

The good news is that while they may look scary to see these scars on your body, they don’t cause any known health problems long term. However if they get to large of course they can affect your range of motion if they are in a particularly troublesome spot such as the palms of your hand. The cause of them is unknown, but it appears to be hereditary. Both genders are at equal risk. If you have a great amount of pigment in your skin, such as if you have African heritage, unfortunately you are at much higher risk of being susceptible to developing them. They often first develop in your late teens or during your twenties, but you can get them at any age. Also many only get keloids on one location of their body. So if you have developed a keloid on a belly button piercing or an ear piercing, it doesn’t necessarily mean you will develop these scars in other places, too.

How to treat a keloid on belly button:

Fortunately this scar is developing on your belly button and not another more prominent location like your face. This can make it easier since you can usually hide it while you are treating it. And remember, as previously mentioned you want to nip these things in the butt as soon as possible.Don’t let them grow and harden over time because than the keloid removal may be more difficult.

A skin care specialist (dermatologist) is your best approach. He or she has been trained in treating this condition and also can perform procedures you can’t do yourself, such as a steroid injections and surgical removal. So schedule an appointment right away, but while you’re waiting to see the doctor, there are a few things you can do that some claim to be effective.

There are certain ingredients which many people claim to be effective on a keloid if it is used right when it is first forming. These ingredients typically consist of a special onion bulb extra and silicone gel. Alpha hydroxy treatments have also been mentioned without further research it’s hard to say if they would be the best scar treatment choice. Another method is applying tea tree oil to the scar several times a day for a few weeks. They are all ingredients which can be purchased over the counter at reasonable prices in the form of oils and specially formulated scar products for keloid removal.

Believe it or not, there’s very little known about the source of keloids and why the form. Fortunately there have been a number of different methods developed over the years to treat them. The most effective treatments you can only get from a doctor.

First of all, it should be said that the best treatment is prevention. Of course if you don’t know you’re prone to keloid scarring this can be nearly impossible. But if they run in your family or you are at a higher risk (such as if you have darker skin complexion) there are certain things you should try and avoid. This includes piercings, whether they are in the ear, nose, or some other location. Often the location of a piercing is the first place many people will develop a keloid. So if you’re think you’re at high risk, it’s probably best to avoid doing this. It’s understandable that at certain ages, such as our teen years, we all may have the desire to get a piercing. But when you weigh the odds, it’s not worth the risk if you are predisposed to this condition.

Surgical Removal
This is probably the most effective way to remove them, especially when combined with other treatments. Unfortunately if you have a large scar there is little that can be done to improve it other than having it cut off by a doctor. Fortunately the procedure is performed by a dermatologist and is often rather simple. The doctor will inject a local anesthetic into the area so you don’t feel anything. He will remove the scar tissue and close your skin up with either stitches or sutures.

Other Removal Techniques
There are a number of other techniques utilized which are not as common. Laser treatments are available but there are a couple drawbacks with this method. First of all the laser only penetrates the top surface of the scar, so it’s not very effective at treating thick or bulky keloids. However lasers may be effective in treating the discoloration associated with flat scars. Unfortunately a person usually requires a series of several laser sessions and these can be costly.

Other possible treatments for keloids include freezing (cryotherapy). Because keloids can be very difficult to reduce or remove, it is important to work with a physician who specializes in skin scarring and healing to help find the best treatment. A low dose treatment of radiation is sometimes used but its been said its effectiveness is not the best.

Topical Ointments and Creams
There are a number of prescription and non-prescription creams on the market for treating keloids. Some may help but many don’t. And all of them are generally only helpful when treating newly developing scars soon after detection. Generally the active ingredients in these are silicone gel and onion bulb extract. Silicone scar sheets and gels have been shown to be helpful for other types of scars too.

Many people have gotten their ears or nose pierced only to later develop this type of scar from it. In turn, they make the assumption that the piercing is the cause of their keloid. Is this true?

Well, the answer is actually a bit complicated. First of all it’s important to note that doctors and the medical community very little about this bizarre skin problem. There has been no specific cause that has been scientifically proven. That being said, it does appear that genetics plays a part in whether or not someone is prone to them. So if your genes are the cause, than the piercings are not what is causing them. However, the piercings did trigger their formation if you developed one in the area that was pierced.

When Do Keloids Form?
This is also a tough question to answer. Typically, it’s said that they most often form for the first time between the ages of 18 and 30. They can form at almost any age above and below that range, but that is less common. Both men and women are at equal risk. It’s unknown what the exact percentage of the population is that gets them, but numbers from 0.9% to 6% have been mentioned – so it’s probably somewhere between 1 out of a 100 and 6 out of 100 people. Typically, they tend to occur more often in those with darker skin and it will often run in families. In fact, it’s been mentioned the risk is nineteen times greater for African-Americans and some other dark skin ethnicities.

Do Piercings Cause Keloids?
Any type of trauma to the skin can trigger and offer the right conditions for keloid formation. So although a piercing is a very controlled procedure, it’s still very traumatic on earlobe, nose, or whatever area the tissue is that is getting a hole put in it. Because of that, if this condition runs in your family or you think you are prone to it, you should strongly consider avoiding piercings altogether. Most would agree it’s just not worth the risk.

Remember that just because you haven’t developed these types the scars on other parts of your body that have been injured or traumatized before, it doesn’t mean your scott free. For some unknown reason, there are individuals that only develop keloids on certain parts of their body. So although you may have not developed any on your body, your ears could be a location that is prone to them.

What If I’m Developing One?
If you recently got your ears pierced and think you are a developing a keloid it’s important to see a dermatologist as quickly as possible. This is because the sooner they can treat it, the easier and more effectively they can do it. Older scars are much more difficult to treat and remove because they harden and often continue to grow bigger. Professional help from a doctor is the best option for treatment.

The development of keloids on the ear can be both confusing and frightening if you do not know you are prone to this skin problem. Often times, both men and women undego an ordinary piercing, only to discover afterwards earlobe keloids developing. If you suspect this, you should see a dermatologist as soon as possible. Why? Because it’s much easier to treat a new keloid than an old one. The most effective treatment the doctor will use usually first involves a steroid injection (kenalog) into the earlobe. What this does is soften the tissue to make removal easier for the doctor later on. Please don’t be tempted to postpone the doctor and resort to do-it-yourself home remedies and creams. Because time is of the essence, you need to see a skin specialist as soon as possible so it doesn’t develop into a harder scar to remove down the road.

Unfortunately we know very little about what causes keloids and how to prevent them. They are so unusual that sometimes they only occur on one part of the body. There have been individuals who have never had a keloid scar in their life and after they got their ears pierced, they developed but only on one ear. Typically they first appear between 10 and 30 years of age. So it’s a very confusing problem for sure that can be terrifying when you notice the first lump. Although it’s easier said than done, please don’t be scared. Many people suffer from this disorder and there are many dermatologists and other doctors out there that specialize in treating them. They are not contagious and pose no health problems that are long term. However, if they are growing on a location such as your hands, joints, or muscles, their bulk may affect movement and range of movement.

Earlobe Keloid Removal
How are they removed? Well it’s important to clarify that there is no cure for this condition. The best case scenario would be their successful removal and none coming back in the future. There is a significant chance they can return after surgical removal – some say that number is as high as 50%. The good thing is that surgery is usually used in combination with other treatment methods, such as steroid injections and prescription gels. When they are used together, the odds of the scar returning are often much lower.

How Do You Get Rid Of Earlobe Keloids?
This is something you need to discuss with a dermatologist or medical doctor that specializes in treating them to find out which treatment would be best for you. That being said, one common method doctors use is to first do a series of steroid injections. This will hopefully soften and shrink it a little. Sometime after that the doctor will usually cut off the remaining mass of the keloid. While this procedure may sound frightening, please don’t be alarmed. It’s a simple procedure where anesthetic is first injected into the earlobe so you don’t feel anything. It is then cut out and your skin is sealed up with a few sutures. Afterwards, you will be instructed to use an anti-bacteria ointment on a daily basis while it heals.

What Else Can Be Done?
You need to see a dermatologist and probably undergo a treatment plan similar to the one previously described in order to effective remove the keloid. There are numerous at home remedies some people claim to work but be weary of these. People may report a successful outcome using these methods for a new scar that was forming that they thought was a keloid, however often it turns out they did not have a keloid, but rather a hypertrophic scar or just a regular scar. There are also many creams, lotions, and oils being sold for the treatment of this condition. They may help improve other types of scarring, but the honest truth is they have not been proven effective in treating keloids. Don’t postpone professional medical treatment put your hope into products like these that just aren’t going to work. This is especially important since the longer you have a keloid, the harder is to treat. So if you have one or are developing one, see a dermatologist as soon as possible.

WARNING: This article refers to a medical procedure which must be performed by a licensed physician. Do NOT attempt this method of treatment yourself!

When administered by your doctor, steroid injections are sometimes an effective method for keloid removal when used in conjunction with other treatments. This is a slightly more complicated medical procedure than you would expect, because usually local anesthesia needs since large and tough keloids can be painful.

What Are Steroids?
Steroids are naturally occurring substances. They can also be produced synthetically. They produce various physiological effects on the body. Corticosteroids are a class of steroids which are often used for their anti-inflammatory qualities, or in other words, to minimize swelling. These substances are brief-acting, so they are only effective temporarily.

Why Are Steroids Used For Keloids?
It’s important to note that keloids are not a condition humans fully understand yet. Although we suspect it is genetic, it is not known exactly why they form. In the same way, we don’t know exactly how all of the keloid removal treatments work. But when it comes to injecting steroids, there are a number of things we do know. First of all we know it tends to be most effective on fresh scars either before they have formed or while they are forming. We also know that when used, they typically soften the scar tissue as well as decrease the mass of it. Although it’s important to note that each person and scar is unique, so everyone reacts differently. For some people it may help, for other it may not be very effective.

When Should Steroids Be Used On Keloids?
Please note that we are not medical professionals, so you should consult a licensed doctor to know when steroids should be used. However we can say that injections are typically used after a person has had scar removal surgery or they have a new scar that is developing.

Who Should I Talk To About Treatment?
There are many doctors who specialize in keloid removal. Many of them either have a background in dermatology, plastic surgery, or both. Because this is such a specialized condition, it’s best to talk to a doctor to find out what is best for you.
